ARE MAYWEATHER AND ALVAREZ ON A COLLISSION COURSE FOR NEXT YEAR?

After successfully defending his WBC Super Welterweight Title last November against Kermit Cintron, the young, Mexican Champion Saul Alvarez boldly called out the current WBC Welterweight Champion and top pound for pound fighter Floyd Mayweather. According to recent reports, his wish could come true next year if gets by Shane Mosley and Mayweather gets by Miguel Cotto on May 5.

Alvarez, who has currently been a headliner in recent years since winning his title, had to be convinced this time around to take a lesser role on the May 5 card where he will be underneath the main event when he defends his title against Shane Mosley. According to a report from Boxingscene.com
Alvarez claimed, "The condition to fight in a preliminary [position to] Mayweather - is that I would face whoever wins. If Mayweather wins, [the fight] won't happen until next year because he only fights once per year, and he has to go to jail for three months, so it wouldn't happen until 2013. I placed that condition in, and I have every intention to follow through on this. I initially didn't want appear as a co-star. I preferred to fight on another day and another place. I was told that Mayweather also wants to fight with me and that I would be next, so we agreed to [be the co-feature]."

If it all plays out as expected and both Alvarez and Mayweather win on May 5, it looks like the potential “Mega Fight” between Pacquiao and Mayweather will be put on hold once again or scrapped all together, as many expected. I suspect that we will get more information in the next coming months regarding this story, and it should be real interesting to see how this all plays out.

Saul Alvarez has said that he stills views Mosley as a serious threat, and he won’t be looking past him, but these recent reports may suggest otherwise. This fight is a must win situation for both men. It's probably Mosley’s last chance at the top level if he should lose and for Alvarez, even though he is only twenty one years old, if he should lose, his dream fight, at least for now, would be put on hold, and he would be taking a backward step in his career.

On May 5 there will be a lot more at stake than just the WBC Super Welterweight Title. Alvarez and Mosley will also be fighting for their future in the sport.
